Séverin Kaji, M.A.

Short Biography

Séverin Kaji earned his M.A and Mphil in Sociology in Cameroon at the University of Yaoundé I. He also graduated from the European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations, an African-European Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Migration Studies jointly run by three African and four European universities, facilitated by a wider network of partners.

For his PhD, Séverin Kaji is interested in student mobility from Cameroon to China. Under the influence of several factors (the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Cameroon, the diversity of scholarship opportunities in China, migration brokerage, a favorable visa policy, etc.), China has emerged as a major destination for Cameroonian university students.

From a "Multi-sited" and "Multi-scalar" approaches, Séverin Kaji's research analyses student migration from the state (China's political rhetoric and Cameroon's discourse and expectations), institutional (Chinese Universities' rationales for recruiting or hosting foreign students) and individual (students' perceptions of living and studying in China) perspectives.
