Summer School Ningbo 2019

CHINA global: Politics of Infrastructure

Summer School in Ningbo: September 02-09, 2019
in Cooperation with Nottingham-Ningbo University, PR China

  • What is the shape of China global?
  • How do Chinese transnational investments in infrastructures and production facilities effect lives worldwide?
  • Which historical experiences and normative concepts inform Chinese strategies of globalization?
  • How can and should the humanities and social sciences explore of the emergent worlds of a new global China?

These and other questions will be discussed in the seminar "China Global" under the thematic field of Politics of Infrastructure:

  • A Chinese model of development?
  • Infrastructure shaping emerging social world
  • The moral ambiguity of large infrastructure and public goods
  • Transregional trading nodes and global exchange.

After the course, students will be able to better understand Chinas growing influence on the world, and in particular the consequences of its global infrastructural investments (e.g., the Belt and Road Strategy - aka The New Silkroad).

The master seminar is eligible for students of

  • Master Ethnologie, Master RS China, Master Chinastudien, Master IKB, Master Politikwissenschaft, Master SKIW, Master Geographie,
  • and PhD students.

As the excursion to China is funded, the course is limited to 12 participants. Participation is strictly required (both at the 4 seminars in Cologne, and at the summer school in Ningbo). In order to identify the most eligible students (in case of more than 12 applicants), we must ask you to send us

Schedule

The seminar consists of four sessions in Cologne and an additional, week-long summer school program in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China from September 2-9, 2019. The summer school is organized together with the Social Science Faculty of the University of Nottingham-Ningbo. There will be teachers from Cologne and Ningbo, as well as an Invited International Guest (Prof. Penny Harvey, University of Manchester, UK).
