How to apply for the M.A. Social & Cultural Anthropology?

It is possible to start the programme in the winter semester as well as in the summer semester.

The formal application procedure depends on the country in which the previous degree was obtained.

Applicants with degrees from German universities

Students who completed their previous degree (usually Bachelor) at the University of Cologne or at another German university should apply exclusively via the university's internal campus management portal KLIPS 2.0.

Please note that as a (future) graduate of our faculty, you do not need a certified transcript (transcript of records), the simple printout you receive in KLIPS is sufficient. If you do not yet have a Bachelor's degree certificate, simply leave the relevant field blank.

A paper application or an application via Uni Assist is not intended for applicants with German degrees.

 Applicants with an international first degree

If you obtained your Bachelor's degree outside of Germany, please note the two-stage application procedure!

1. application for a preliminary review documentation (VPD) at uni-assist

Processing time is approx. 3 - 4 weeks. Please apply for the VPD as early as possible before the application deadline at the UzK. In order to participate in the application procedure for the winter term, the documents for the VDP examination should be submitted to uni-assist as early as possible.

2. application via the application portal of the UzK Klips 2.0

and then use the UNI ASSIST application portal of the University of Cologne for the application process.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master's programme in Social and Cultural Anthropology is open to students who have obtained a Bachelor's degree (or a comparable degree) in the subjects of Ethnology, Social or Cultural Anthropology, provided these subjects that are anchored in ethnological (methodological: ethnographic) subject traditions.

Bachelor graduates (as well as graduates with a comparable degree) from affine subjects can also be admitted after a case-by-case assessment. In these cases, at least 40 CP must be available in relevant subject studies.

Affine subjects include European ethnology or cultural studies, which have roots in the tradition of folkloristic and/or literary studies; social science subjects, such as (developmental) sociology, and last but not least, study programmes oriented towards regional and area studies, such as Asian and African studies or Islamic studies.

Language skills

English language skills at level B2 are required as a further admission requirement for the Master's programme.

Knowledge of another modern foreign language other than English must be acquired during the course of study, if not already available at the beginning of the programme. If this further foreign language is a European foreign language, knowledge at the level of A2 CEF is required. This applies analogously for a non-European language.

The language requirements must be proven at the latest when registering for the Master's thesis.
