Department Roundtable

Dear students and members of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology,

On Wednesday, 08.05. 2024 from 16:00 to around 18.30 the 1st Institute Roundtable will take place in summer 2024, as usual in the Ethno-Library (more on this first meeting will soon be available here)

The 2nd Institute Roundtable is scheduled towards the end of the summer semester on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 from 16-18.00. We will then bring the semester to a vibrant close with "Dancing Anthropology" (location to be announced)

On Wednesday (10th January) the third roundtable discussion and last of this semester will take place at our department library from 17:00-18:00h. 

We kindly invite all department members and especially all students from our BA and MA programmes to discuss the state of the art and future of anthropology in Cologne, exchange our perspectives, and have an open dialogue. The roundtable will be held in English and German. We are aware that for many it is not the native language, and we support each other in translating.

The debate will focus on one main question, which you can think about in advance:

  • What feedback ideas can we realistically implement at the Department now and what are (utopian) ideas for the future?

As we are aiming to establish a productive exchange and future perspective in and for our department, please be reminded that the roundtable will be continued during the next summer semester as well.

On the 06th of December the second roundtable discussion of this semester has taken place at the department library from 17:00-18:00h.

We kindly invite all department members and especially all students from our BA and MA programmes to discuss the state of the art and future of anthropology in Cologne, exchange our perspectives, and have an open dialogue.

The roundtable will take place as a world café (30 minutes) and will be held in English and German. We are aware that for many it is not the native language and we support each other in translating. The debate will focus on one main question, which you can think about in advance:

  • How can we as educators and students contribute to a more open learning and feedback culture?

 As we are aiming to establish a productive exchange and future perspective in and for our department, please be reminded of the third roundtable on 10th January, 17:00-18:00 where we will continue our discussion.

Everyone is very welcome to join the subsequent Nikolaus Party at the department library to continue conversations.

  1. How can we imagine anthropology? Was kann Ethnologie sein?

  2. What do we need for an utopian anthropology in Cologne? Was benötigen wir für eine utopische Ethnologie in Köln?
